A cigarette is primarily made of dried and processed tobacco leaves, a paper wrapper, and a filter (the yellow fiber-like material that remains after the cigarette finishes burning), with the tobacco being the main ingredient and the filter trapping larger bits of partially burned tobacco.

1. Tobacco: Tobacco is the core of a cigarette.  It is the naturally dried and processed tobacco leaves, typically Nicotiana tabacum.

2. Paper Wrapper: The tobacco is wrapped in a thin, porous paper to hold it in place and allow for easy rolling and smoking.

3. Filter: A filter, usually made of cellulose acetate, is placed at the end of the cigarette to trap larger particles and some tar, although it does not filter out all harmful substances.

4. Other Ingredients in cigarettes

Besides the main components, cigarettes also contain various additives, including flavorings, binders, and other chemicals, which can vary by the company that manufactures the cigarette.

To enhance flavor, aroma, and consistence burning, cigarettes often contain additional additives, such as filters, paper chemicals, and flavorings. These additives can vary between brands and may include substances like menthol or other flavorings.

Cigarettes contain many dangerous chemicals, according to scientists. Some occur naturally in tobacco, which is the main ingredient, and others are formed when processing tobacco into cigarettes. When a cigarette is burned, it releases more harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke.

Decades of studies have proven that many of these chemicals are harmful to people who smoke and also to people who breathe in second-hand smoke. 

On the contrary, some health histories show that cigarette smoking is not as harmful as it is to some people. You may ask why? We will answer that question before the end of this article.

What are the chemicals in cigarettes that cause cancer?

Many clinical studies have shown that cigarettes emit many harmful chemicals to human health. These chemicals have been linked to cancer, heart disease, and lung disease, and they can cause damage to a developing fetus in a pregnant woman.

Some of the carcinogenic chemical compounds found in cigarette smoke include:

  • 1,3-Butadiene is used in rubber manufacturing
  • Arsenic is a poison. Although inorganic arsenic, which is poisonous, is found naturally in the tobacco plant. Arsenic is also used in the production of insecticides, wood preservation, dye, textile materials, paper, and ammunition. Etc.
  • Benzene is an industrial solvent, made from crude oil
  • Beryllium is used in nuclear reactors
  • Cadmium is used in batteries

Chromium is used to manufacture dyes, paints, and car alloys.

  • Formaldehyde is used in science labs and mortuaries
  • Polonium-21 is a highly radioactive element

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a group of dangerous chemicals found in oil and coal, including benzo(a)pyrene.

  • Tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs)
  • Vinyl chloride

How did Radioactive materials find their way into cigarettes?

Radioactive materials are found in the tobacco leaves used to make cigarettes and cigars. They come from the fertilizer and soil used to grow the tobacco leaves. The amount of radioactive materials in tobacco leaves depends on the soil the plants were grown and the type of fertilizers used.

These radioactive materials are given off in the smoke you inhale when you use cigarettes or cigars. Long-term exposure to this radiation can damage your lungs and increase the damage caused by other carcinogens. This might increase your risk of lung cancer.

Here are some of the ways that harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke damage your body:

Chemicals in tobacco smoke damage DNA.

Our DNA controls how our cells grow and behave. DNA damage can cause cells to behave in ways they’re not supposed to, which can lead to cancer (cells attacking each other).

Chemicals in tobacco smoke damage DNA. This includes the parts of DNA that protect our cells from becoming cancerous.

There are also chemicals in tobacco smoke that stop our cells from repairing damaged DNA. This makes it even more likely that cancer will develop.

Chemicals in tobacco smoke harm the cleaning system in our airways.

Chemicals in tobacco smoke damage the cilia in our airways. Cilia keep our airways clear from dirt and infections.

This means people who smoke are less able to clear toxic chemicals. The chemicals build up and cause damage. A cough is often developed as the lungs try to clear themselves.     

Chemicals in tobacco smoke may affect our immune system and cause inflammation.

Our immune system is designed to protect us. But some research suggests chemicals in tobacco smoke may affect how our immune system works. Chemicals in tobacco smoke have also been shown to cause inflammation, which can lead to DNA damage.

One of the questions is;

Why do some smokers live long and never develop lung cancer or any type of tobacco-related cancer health issues?

Yeah. This is an intelligent question.

I grew up hearing health news that always said smokers are liable to die early.

Smoking cigarettes or tobacco products causes lung cancer.

I know you have heard the same news.

When I grew up, I began to observe all the people who smoked around me and all the smokers in my village. Funny enough, none of these smokers died as a result of any cancer issue, and those who are still alive aren’t suffering from lung cancer. 

I then began asking myself the above question, “Why do some smokers live long and never develop lung cancer or any type of tobacco-related cancer health issues?”

You may think that I’m misleading my audience. Not at all, I’m not misleading. I’m telling you the truth from life experience.

Don’t get it twisted, I’m African. Many smokers from Africa, for example, Nigeria, have smoked for decades and never developed lung cancer. And some of them live longer than people who don’t smoke.

The only health problem that excess smoke may have caused to Africans is that excess cigarette or marijuana smoke sometimes affects their sperm health, and this is not true for every man who smokes in Africa.

As a result, some of them do have low sperm count and find it hard to impregnate their wife. But if they abstain from smoking throughout the time they’re preparing to conceive, they will impregnate their wife successfully.

Now you’ve got another question, right?

Why is it that most people from Africa don’t develop lung cancer or any other tobacco-related cancer health issues?

What scientists found among smokers.

In 2022, some scientific research provided an answer to this question, including a clinical study carried out in Shanghai in China.

Here it is, read what they have found.

Cigarette smoking is overwhelmingly the main cause of lung cancer, yet only a minority of smokers develop the disease.

 A study led by scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and published online in Nature Genetics suggests that some smokers may have robust mechanisms that protect them from lung cancer by limiting mutations.

The findings could help identify those smokers who face an increased risk for the disease and therefore warrant especially close monitoring.

The Einstein researchers used SCMDA to compare the mutational landscape of normal lung epithelial cells (i.e., cells lining the lung) from two types of people: 14 never-smokers, ages 11 to 86; and 19 smokers, ages 44 to 81, who had smoked a maximum of 116 pack years. (One pack year of smoking equals 1 pack of cigarettes smoked per day for one year.)

The cells were collected from patients who were undergoing bronchoscopy for diagnostic tests unrelated to cancer.

“These lung cells survive for years, even decades, and thus can accumulate mutations with both age and smoking,” said Dr. Spivack. “Of all the lung’s cell types, these are among the most likely to become cancerous

“The heaviest smokers did not have the highest mutation burden,”(lung cell damage), said Dr. Spivack. “Our data suggest that these individuals may have survived for so long in spite of their heavy smoking because they managed to suppress further mutation accumulation.

This leveling off of mutations could stem from these people having very proficient systems for repairing DNA damage or detoxifying cigarette smoke.

However, more research is needed to conclude.

Another study was carried out in 2013,  among 481,640 South Africans aged between 35–74 years between 1999 and 2007.  Both men and women in the coloured (mixed black and white ancestry), full black population were assessed both for mortality and lung cancer development.

In the coloured population, smoking prevalence was high in both sexes and smokers had about 50% higher overall mortality than did otherwise similar non-smokers or ex-smokers (men, RR 1·55, 95% CI 1·43–1·67; women, 1·49, 1·38–1·60). RRs were similar in the white population (men, 1·37, 1·29–1·46; women, 1·51, 1·40–1·62), but lower among Africans (men, 1·17, 1·15–1·19; women, 1·16, 1·13–1·20).

Because national mortality rates were also substantially higher in the coloured than in the white population, the hazards from smoking in the coloured population were more than double those in the white population.

According to a study, the highest smoking-attributed mortality rates were in the coloured population, and the lowest were in Africans.

Some research suggests that certain genetic variations might contribute to why most African individuals don’t develop smoking-related diseases, especially lung cancer.

While more research is needed, it’s possible that some populations, including those in Africa, have genetic predispositions that protect them against lung cancer and DNA mutation.

However, more research is needed to fully understand the specific factors that contribute to the lower incidence of lung cancer in some African populations, including genetic and environmental factors.

Other risk factors that may lead to lung cancer, aside from smoking, include

  • Environmental exposure to asbestos,
  • A dusty occupation (in men),
  • Indoor air pollution may also contribute to the development of lung cancer in some people.

Conclusion

The truth is that, health-wise, smoking is not beneficial to your health. Although to some people their body may have a strong metabolic mechanism to detoxify the harmful chemical compounds that are emitted from tobacco smoke into the body.

It’s very important you find a way to minimize your smoking habit, or quitting gradually is a good move.

You may opt for smoking marijuana or using it to cook food to avoid carbon monoxide, which is formed during smoking. But before you start smoking marijuana or add it to your food, try a very small quantity to see if your brain can handle it peacefully.

The reason I’m recommending marijuana is that it is 100 percent natural. But only when you use it in a nonsmoking method like cooking or boiling.

Although there’s no safe way to use tobacco products, if you can access 100 percent natural tobacco and use it in a nonsmoking method, that could be more beneficial for your health.
