Studies have shown that a quality and efficacious skin care regimen can have a positive impact on the quality of life of consumers.

We love a good skincare routine, but all the fancy topical creams in the world couldn’t replace the basics: restful sleep, a diverse natural nutritious diet, and plenty of hydration.

Healthy skin truly does start from within. Skincare experts often recommend water-dense, high-fat foods to keep your skin dewy and supple. When it comes to skin that appears lit from within, nutrition carries significant weight.

Dr. Whitney Bowe(WB) is best known for championing the skin-gut-mind connection and has developed what she calls a “three-dimensional” approach to skin care.

By balancing the gut microbiome, fueling the brain, and nourishing skin, her line aims to deliver transformative results.

Beauty News: How did you come up with the concept for your skincare line?

WB: I found that even when you’re using the best topical skin care products in strategic and deliberate ways, you will inevitably hit a limit in terms of the results you can see.

To push through that limit and achieve optimal skin health, you have to think about taking care of your skin from the inside out and from the outside in, focusing on the skin, gut, and mind.

I call this a three-dimensional approach to skincare and it drives meaningful, measurable, clinically-proven results. That is at the core of Dr. Whitney Bowe’s Beauty.

She’s known to name pomegranate, watermelon, egg whites, and nuts among her favorite skin-friendly foods. Also, Bowe recently shared her favorite everyday smoothie for dewy, supple skin.

How do you make a skin glow-inducing smoothie?

To create a skin-supporting sip, Bowe recommends selecting ingredients with protein, antioxidants (specifically, food rich in Vitamin C) skin-friendly fats, and prebiotics

Her smoothie fits the bill quite nicely: She includes banana for prebiotics that nurture the gut-skin axis; almond butter for protein and healthy fats; and blueberries, spinach, and cacao powder for those potent antioxidants.

Specifically, cacao powder “contains polyphenols, which are bioactive nutrients known to quench free radicals and rebalance the gut microbiome,” she explains in a comment.

Blueberries, on the other hand, contain anthocyanins (or the pigments that give berries their blue-purple coloring), which have been shown to help support healthy skin aging by providing antioxidant protection against environmental exposure and free radicals. Research shows these anthocyanins can also promote natural collagen.

Vitamin C also has an integral part in collagen synthesis, and it stabilizes the collagen you already have. “It’s present in the berries and spinach (aghara leaf)

In short: This smoothie contains antioxidant-rich and collagen-supporting ingredients, both of which can help enhance your glow”.

Let’s jump to the Recipe

Recipe

Ingredients

1 small banana, frozen in chunks

1/2 avocadoes cut

One teaspoon of groundnut/peanut (either cooked, fried, or roasted)

1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

1 cup spinach or aghara leaf or 1/2 small cucumber

1 tablespoon almond butter

1 tablespoon raw cacao powder

1½ cups almond milk or fresh yogurt

You can have one Full Egg either cooked or raw. Some people may want to remove the yolk and use only the egg white. But the truth is that you need the egg yolk because that’s where the vitamins and minerals (such as vitamin A and choline) are found.

Directions:

Place all ingredients into a blender and whirr until smooth.

Pour into a glass and enjoy!

Why you should add collagen supplements if available.

If you want to add some extra protein and beauty benefits, I suggest chucking in a scoop of collagen powder.

Hydrolyzed collagen peptides have been shown to help promote your body’s natural production of collagen and other molecules that make up the skin, like elastin and fibrillin.

In addition to those collagen peptides, it contains vitamins C and E for enhanced collagen production and antioxidant support, hyaluronic acid for skin hydration, biotin for your beauty needs, and curcumin from turmeric extract and sulforaphane from broccoli seed extract for supporting detoxification and combating.

Conclusion

If you’re looking to incorporate more skin-supporting foods into your daily meals, why not include them all in one delicious blend?

Taking the above-recommended smoothie recipe two to three times a week for three months, while cutting down on too much sugar and alcohol plus smoking (if you do drink or smoke) will leave you with succulent shiny glowing skin.

Always stay hydrated and take some time off to get enough sleep.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications, consult with your doctor before starting a supplement routine. It is always optimal to consult with a healthcare provider when considering what supplements are right for you.
